1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
The English language is a world language it is spoken in many countries of the
world. It has come to stay as force to be reckoned with by many nations. It is the
official language for years. Its currently states has made it more popular and more
attractive to Nigeria of different linguistic background. As a second language of
foreign origin English language spoken in Nigeria manipulates different features
that is making it to be considered as the Nigerian Variety of English (Nigerian
English).
This emerging variety of English has it own varieties which crinave with the
different language that exist in Nigeria. Yoruba is major language in Nigeria and
its educated speakers are more in number than educated speakers of any order
language to unveil the phonological features of the spoken English of Yoruba
students.
1.2 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of the study is to reveal the phonological interference in the spoken
English of NCE1 student of English / Yoruba combination of FCE Zaria.
It is hoped that the finding will confirm existing findings that there are coloration
specific to Yoruba English.
The finding will enable the students to see the nature of interference in their
spoken communication and develop them adjust.
1.3 PROBLEM OF THE STUDY
English language is a major killer language. It has become a major sign of
education in Nigeria as it is the language through which education is imparted.
Speakers level of western as shown in His/her spoken communication is usually
used as a ready yards tic for determining his/her level of education .
Yet refined English production that equals that of the nature speakers is a rarity in
Nigeria. Students of English are expected to fair better and be the model of
speech. The problem this research sets out to solve is to uncover the nature of the
phonological interference among the English / Yoruba (Li) students determine the
effect of the interference on intelligently.
1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
Interference can be any level of linguistic description lexical Semantic Syntactic
phonological. At the phonological level interference can be at two levels.
Segmental and suprasegmental. This work is concern basically with interference
all the phonological level. It is also limited to the segmental levels prosodic
features are therefore outside its scope
1.5 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The following research question are formulated to guide the course its research
(a) Does Yoruba language interfere with the spoken English of NCE1
Students study English and Yoruba in FCE Zaria.
(b) Does the cause of interference regular and therefore general
(c) Does the interference noticed more among males than females
(d) Does the interference affect communication or intelligibility?
